Corporate Careers that Make a Difference

18 Dec

Found this resource on the Net Impact website. It’s a great resource, especially if you’re a new grad (like myself) looking to set yourself up for a career that goes beyond traditional barriers. Activists typically view corporations as the “bad guys”. But let’s face it, they’re here to stay and have the power to make a difference. Rather than fighting corporations, this resource shares ways of allying with corporations to work for change.

Walk so kids can talk

28 Mar

Kids Help Phone is an amazing organization that has been providing youth with non-judgemental, sound advice since May of 1989! The organization provides free and confidential professional counselling via phone and online forums. They offer advice on anything concerning youth –  breakups, suicide, divorce, bullying, etc. What’s important to KHP is that, if a child needed someone to talk to (even if it was something trivial like a boyfriend not texting back), someone was there to help them.

The organization prides itself on being accessible to youth. You’ll find their phone # plastered on all kinds of products (e.g. chocolate bars) and soon, they will be available to chat via IM! In order to continue providing these great services to kids, KHP fundraises over 25% of their operating budget from the annual Walk so Kids can Talk event. It’s a family-friendly event, so sign up to walk today. If you cannot make it out to the walk, please donate and encourage your friends to do the same!

Water, water everywhere

16 Oct

Turn on the tap, it’s easy to forget that 1.2 billion people don’t have access to safe drinking water around the world.  Children miss school due to illnesses caused by drinking unsafe water, which they had to miss school to get from wells or water sources kilometers away. Learn more at Free the Children here.

It’s tricky to think about how I would change this? I’m just one person, right? And while, change might not happen overnight, it’s important not to forget that we have a duty to do something – campaign, spread the word, tweet, volunteer, donate.
